I’ve started a new piece in limestone. I was working on a basalt piece before this, but it was too chippy: pieces would flake off for no good reason. This, I now know, is just the nature of basalt. So, no photos of that. This one I’m attempting a “Birth of Venus” thing; this view is the back side.

Winter weather has forced me inside so I’ve taken up felting again. This is the start of a dragon. I’ll stuff it later, with strawberries, rats, and fire.

My hand, in steatite.

I love how the stone takes on such a liquid shine with only sanding (800 grit), and holds the finest details.

The only drawback is that it’s so soft that an errant fingernail strike can leave a mark.

This is as finished as I’m going to make it. Well actually, I did a little more work on the lower eyelids, but now it’s really done. I need to work on proportions of features: the mouth is a little too wide — then again, I know some people like that. Next I’m going to work on a face with some expressions, liven it up a bit ya know.

A-a-and it’s broken. I made the mistake of leaving it within reach of the kids, and one of them (who shall remain nameless) knocked it face down. I guess now I can call it “The Sphinx”! Or, Michael Jackson.

Something abstract I made for my sister. Usually while I’m working on a piece, and especially when I’m encased in protective gear (hearing, eyes, body (sometimes)) I’m in my own little cocoon and my thoughts are the loudest thing in the room. Snippets of songs, memories of events good and bad, examining feelings and things that float around my consciousness. Sometimes it’s in a language I speak, othertimes, not so much. With this piece I wanted to convey the feeling that you get when you have a continuous inner monologue but it’s in a language you don’t understand.

Also: nipples.

Not technically art, but …

I took a Dremel to an iPhone 2G dock to make it work with my 3G phone, and while I was at it I made it big enough to accommodate the phone in its ifrogz case. Small victory, eh, but since the 3G docks are $29 without the cable, I figure my 15 minutes spent grinding the excess away is pretty worth it.

I love the ifrogz case, btw. Grippy, beautiful colors, and sturdy.

More progress on Sergio Leone.

The eyes were a bit too human, so here I’m knocking down the brow and rotating the axis of the lids to be more leonine. This also lengthens the snout a bit.
